Located in Shengfang Town, Bazhou City, Hebei Province, the Wang Family Courtyard was originally constructed in 1880 (the sixth year of the Guangxu Emperor’s reign). The original owner, Wang Zijian, had the design and construction managed by professionals from Tianjin City, with a rumored expenditure of 30,000 taels of silver. The compound originally consisted of four smaller courtyards: the northeast corner courtyard featured European-style architecture; the southeast corner showcased African architectural styles; the northwest corner maintained the traditional Qing-style Chinese architecture; and the southwest corner served as the entrance courtyard with European-style doors and windows, surrounded by a corridor on all sides, and three distinctively styled doors.
The main gate is a large tiger-seat gate tower, with exquisite brick carvings on the gate tower’s eaves, consisting of three sections: the central one depicts the White Pagoda Temple in Beijing, the left one shows Broadway in Shanghai, and the right one portrays the Walled River in Tianjin. It is now a protected cultural heritage site at the Bazhou City level. In 1958, the sculpture department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts visited and studied the site. The main gate tower is 4 meters wide and over 5 meters high. After the Tangshan Earthquake, the southwest and southeast courtyards, along with the first, second, and third gates, were demolished, but the northern two courtyards and the northwest and northeast courtyards remain largely intact. The opening hours and business status are subject to the actual conditions on the day.Wang Family Courtyard in Shengfang Town
