Xiong County, historically known as Xiongzhou, was a frontier fortress during the Northern Song Dynasty and a strategic battleground. Today, numerous war relics can be found within the county, with the Song-Liao Border Underground Pass being the most representative. During the Northern Song period, this area marked the border between the Song and Liao dynasties. It is said that the famous Song general Yang Yanzhao defended this place for 16 years without losing an inch of land.
Xiong County, located in a plain region, had no natural defenses on the battlefield, yet Yang Yanzhao won battles repeatedly, which was closely related to the underground tunnels constructed at that time. Since 1964, blue brick structures have been discovered in Qi Gang, Gu Zhuangtou, and Xing Village due to irrigation and soil extraction activities. Experts have identified these as underground passages used for military defense during the Song-Liao period. The underground passages served three military purposes: hiding and transporting troops; quickly conveying intelligence; and monitoring enemy movements using acoustic principles. The ancient tunnels have yielded artifacts such as sauce-glazed jars, bullets, and iron arrowheads.
