Taipei, originally formed by an ancient volcanic eruption into a volcanic lake, gradually evolved into a wetland as the water receded. Han Chinese ancestors moved in and constructed channels for farming, eventually turning the area into fertile fields. During the Qianlong period, Guo Xi from Zhangzhou built an irrigation canal for farmers, which later came to be known as the ‘Rugong Canal’.
