The Lukang Sheng Zu Gong, also known as the ‘New Tianhou Palace’, was established in the 53rd year of the Qianlong Emperor’s reign (1788). It was constructed under the imperial decree of Emperor Qianlong by the nobleman Fu Kang’an. To distinguish it from the Mazu Ancestral Temple on Meizhou Island, it was named ‘New Tianhou Palace’. However, since there was already a Tianhou Palace in Lukang, locals commonly refer to it as ‘New Ancestral Palace’.

The architectural layout of the temple emulates that of a palace, with two wings designated as the civil and military chambers for officials to rest during their incense offerings. Outside the temple, there once stood an imperial decree stone inscribed with ‘Civil officials alight, military officials dismount’, which unfortunately was destroyed by the Japanese colonial authorities and is now lost.

The temple is open to visitors from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM all year round.
