When entering the temple to burn incense, one must taste the vegetarian meals offered within. Childhood memories: The delicious vegetarian noodles from Zhenjiang Jinshan Temple, and even the taste of the siu mai (steamed dumplings) served in the temple could not be compared to those from outside shops. At some point, temples began to charge for entry, and the quality of the vegetarian meals provided became overpriced and subpar, causing people to shake their heads. The reason is probably the pursuit of ‘profit’. When temple vegetarian meals started to chase profits, the high profits, the unique traditional aroma and clean taste of the vegetarian meals, bid you farewell.

There is a Xiahai Temple in Shanghai, close to home, often visited, where the vegetarian meals are just enough to satisfy hunger. This morning, I went out for errands with my daughter. After finishing the errands, it was already lunchtime, and we were very hungry. We decided to take a ride-hailing service to Jing’an Temple. My daughter had recently dined with her university classmates at a vegetarian restaurant adjacent to Jing’an Temple and had a great impression. We entered from the commercial street on the left side of Jing’an Temple and arrived at ‘Taiwan Rendao Vegetarian Restaurant’ after a five-minute walk. The name is a bit strange, not run by Jing’an Temple. The restaurant is quite large, with fast food on the first floor, à la carte on the second floor, and a buffet on the third floor. Upon entering the first floor, the aroma was overwhelming, making one’s mouth water. We sat down and ordered vegetarian noodles. When they were served, I was delighted to see the appealing color and the enticing noodle aroma. I couldn’t wait to taste them, and they were indeed fresh and delicious. Additionally, we were served marinated eggs, vegetarian chicken, and oranges. It had been a long time since I had such vegetarian noodles. As we left the table, the taste still lingered in our mouths. Looking around, we noticed that the restaurant was full of diners.

Strangely, temples are usually built in quiet places, but Jing’an Temple is built right on Nanjing Road… A few diners were standing outside the north gate, and their discussion caught our ears, it seemed that the taste of this vegetarian noodle meal was even better!

— Ah, next time we go to Nanjing Road, let’s eat here! — Yes, it’s a good place, a restaurant with a conscience, delicious food, ample portions, and affordable prices.
