Carper Pond is located in Shoufeng Township, Hualien County. It is a barrier lake formed by the confluence of tributaries of the Papaya River and Hualien River. The lake is vast, with a depth of 15 meters. The water is clear all year round and originates from the heart of the pond. The pond surface is oval, elongated from north to south and narrower from east to west. Its area changes with the seasonal water levels.
At the southern end of Carper Pond, there is a forest recreation area and a camping area. On the western hillside, there is the Jade Mountain Theological College. By the lakeside, there is the Dongshan Fish Breeding Farm. The preferred route is to walk around the lake. The morning mist shrouds the area, creating a tranquil atmosphere. The surrounding mountains pour their verdant greenery into the water, reflecting the white buildings by the lake. Willows flutter along the banks, adorned with quaint grass pavilions. A white statue of Guanyin stands on the hillside of a small island in the lake, benevolently watching the water.
You can also choose to cycle. If you ride from the Hualien East Rift Valley to Carper Pond, you can enjoy the magnificent scenery along the way. Then, ride the 5-kilometer bicycle path around the pond to enjoy the tranquil lake area alone. Every year from June to August, Carper Pond hosts a firefly season. The sparkling lights are dotted between the mountains and the lake, attracting a large number of tourists to watch the fireflies.Additionally, Sally’s Restaurant at the Visitor Center north of the pond offers light meals and afternoon tea services. Local specialties such as taro, sweet potato crisps, and shrimp cakes are distinctive and worth trying. The opening hours and specific business status are subject to the actual situation on the day.
