The Changhua Confucius Temple, established by county magistrate Zhang Hao in the 4th year of the Qing Yongzheng era, signifies the inception of the Confucian academy following Changhua’s establishment as a county.
In the 24th year of the Qianlong era, a significant renovation was carried out by county magistrate Zhang Shi Zhen. This involved paving the pathway with bricks, relocating the ceremonial gate and the path of righteousness outside the Lingxing Gate, and excavating the Pan Pool. A wall of ten thousand ren was constructed outside the pool, and the Minglun Hall was raised by more than two feet, thus setting the scale and layout of today’s Confucius Temple.
Further restorations during the Jiaqing and Daoguang periods included raising the temple’s foundation, replacing the front stone-carved dragon eaves columns in the Dacheng Hall with a pair, and adding stone columns around the eaves corridor. These changes established the current scale and layout of the temple.
The temple is open all year round, operating from Tuesday to Sunday, with visiting hours from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
