Chuhuo Scenic Area, located approximately 5 kilometers outside of Hengchun City, is a natural phenomenon where natural gas stored in mudstone layers seeps out through fissures to the surface and ignites. Around the ignition points, no grass grows, only mud and yellow soil cover the area, yet bursts of orange-red flames emerge. During the day, these small flames cannot compete with the sun’s brightness, but as night falls, it is their time to shine.
This is ‘Chuhuo’, which, despite seasonal variations, never ceases throughout the year. Chuhuo is a must-visit attraction on the Kenting Peninsula, with a newly built parking lot and a fence constructed around the ignition points. Surrounding the area is a vast expanse of green grassland, where water buffaloes often come to graze, creating a picturesque pastoral scene. Some couples even deliberately choose to visit at night, especially during the strong winter monsoon, when the flickering flames of Chuhuo, combined with nearby ancient tombs, add a mysterious and solemn atmosphere. Opening hours are from 9:00 to 20:00 all year round. Important tips: Please do not treat the flames as a bonfire for barbecuing. Also, refrain from using the Chuhuo flames to pop corn sold by roadside vendors. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the scenery in a civilized manner.Chuhuo Special Landscape Area
