The Chuhuo Scenic Area, a natural wonder, is situated approximately 5 kilometers from Hengchun City. This unique site is formed by natural gas that seeps from the mudstone layer through cracks to the surface and ignites. In the vicinity of the fire outlet, grass does not grow; instead, the area is covered with silt and loess. Despite this, orange-red flames emerge in clusters. These small flames are overshadowed by the sun’s brightness during the day, but they truly come alive at night, earning the name ‘Chuhuo’. The fire varies with the seasons but burns continuously throughout the year, making it a must-visit spot on the Kenting Peninsula.
The Chuhuo Scenic Area has seen recent improvements, with the parking lot renovated and expanded, and a fence now encircling the fire outlet for safety. Surrounding the area is a vast expanse of green grassland, often frequented by grazing buffaloes, creating a picturesque rural scene. Many couples choose to visit Chuhuo at night, especially when the northeast monsoon is strong, causing the fire’s shadows to flicker and dance. This, combined with the presence of ancient tombs in the vicinity, adds a layer of mystery and solemnity to the experience.
**Opening Hours:**
The scenic area is open all year round from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
**Must-See Tips:**
Please refrain from using the flames as a bonfire for barbecues or for popping popcorn purchased from roadside vendors. We encourage all visitors to enjoy the site in a civilized manner.
