Changde Apartment, formerly known as ‘Eddington Apartment’, is a seven-story building designed by Italians and established in 1936. The exterior wall is adorned with a light pink color interspersed with coffee-colored lines, quietly and modestly situated on a bustling road near Jing’an Temple. The apartment exudes the musty air of old Shanghai. Upon entering, one can see the old-fashioned Austin elevator, followed by a dimly lit stairwell, with the walls bearing the marks of history. In 1939, Eileen Chang lived in room 51 of this apartment with her aunt, and in 1942, she moved to room 65 (now room 60). During her time here, she wrote famous works such as ‘Love in a Fallen City’, ‘The Golden Cangue’, ‘Red Rose and White Rose’, and ‘Seal’. In her work ‘Notes on Apartment Living’, she talks about everything in this building. The life state of Eileen Chang described by Hu Lancheng in ‘This Life This World’ also takes place here. The apartment is not open to the public all year round; it is closed 24/7 and does not accept visits from non-residents.
