In the early days, there was no Confucius Temple in Fengshan County. In 1686 (the 23rd year of Emperor Kangxi), Magistrate Yang Fangsheng at that time set up a Confucian temple in Xinglongzhuang and a Minglun Hall outside the old city of Zuoying. It was the educational center of Fengshan County at that time. The Chong Sheng Ancestral Hall of Confucius Temple in the old city is located in the Old City Primary School. There is Lotus Pond in front. In the distance, there are Dagushan and Banping Mountain. Nearby are Turtle Mountain and Snake Mountain. It is a treasure land with outstanding people and excellent geomantic omen. Magistrates Song Yongqing and Li Piyu renovated it respectively in 1704 (the 43rd year of Emperor Kangxi) and 1719 (the 58th year of Emperor Kangxi). In 1752 (the 17th year of Emperor Qianlong), Magistrate Wu Shiyuan renovated it again. In 1786 (the 51st year of Emperor Qianlong), the Lin Shuangwen incident occurred and the Confucius Temple in the old city was damaged. Later, the Japanese built the ‘Old City Public School’ in the temple, which is today’s Old City Primary School. The original appearance of the temple was damaged again. At present, only the ‘Chong Sheng Ancestral Hall’ and eleven stone tablets collected from various places nearby remain. The Chong Sheng Ancestral Hall still retains the ‘three beams and five purlins’ style roof truss of the former Qing Dynasty style. There are dragon-shaped pottery figurines and Qing Dynasty gourd ridge ornaments on the roof ridge. The old sandalwood tree beside it has been more than 200 years old and has accompanied the Chong Sheng Ancestral Hall until now. Opening hours: open all day all year round.
