The inscription on the lintel of the outer gate of the city is ‘Fengyi Gate’. The upper inscription reads ‘Construction began in October of the Yiyou year of the Daoguang era and was completed in July of the Bingxu year. Superintendent Chen Kun and fundraising superintendent Liu Yizhong.’ The city wall remains for more than 500 meters and is located behind Dayi High School. The name is derived from the line ‘When the music of Shao is played nine times, the phoenixes come in pairs’ in ‘The Book of History’, so it is called Fengyi Gate. It is the only section of the moat among the four gates with a moat. Surrounded by flowing water, it is full of ancient charm. The entire city is oriented from northeast to southwest. Among all the cities in Taiwan, only the old city of Fengshan can accommodate a mountain within the city. The purpose of this is to strengthen the defensive function and control the enemy from a commanding height. In the arrangement of the old city gates, the east gate is located at the midpoint of the east city wall and is the entrance and exit for the old city of Fengshan to the new city. In the past, soldiers were stationed here for offense and defense and to supply military provisions.
