The Gengliao Ancient Trail
The Gengliao Ancient Trail is one of the five historical paths that once connected Nangang to Shenkeng and Shiding in the early years. It stands out as being relatively well-preserved and is still actively used today.
Preservation and Usage
This ancient trail serves a dual purpose: it is an essential shortcut to Shanzhuku and Tuku Mountain, and it is also a century-old route for those seeking to explore the ruins of ancient houses. The trail has been modernized with granite steps, preserving its historical significance while making it more accessible.
Character and Charm
Despite the modern additions, the narrow start and end points of the trail maintain their ancient and rugged character. Unpaved gravel sections are adorned with small white flowers of Catharanthus roseus, adding to the simplicity and ancient charm of the path.
Connection and History
The latter section of the Gengliao Ancient Trail links up with the Laoliao Ancient Trail, forming part of a historic tea mountain area where numerous tea houses once thrived. The trail also holds historical importance as a site for the transportation and production of camphor in the past.
