The Hualien City God Temple is an ancient temple building in Hualien. Initially, it was a temple built through fundraising initiated by local gentry Su Qingxiu. The Japanese, in order to promote the assimilation policy, wanted to demolish shrines and temples of various deities. Only temples dedicated to Zheng Chenggong were spared. To protect the temple, the local people negotiated with the Japanese. The statue of Prince Yanping in Zheng Shengci on the same street was invited into the City God Temple for worship. The City God Temple was renamed Zheng Shengci. However, people still called it the City God Temple. In 2004, the old temple was rebuilt and took on a brand new look. At the same time, it was officially renamed ‘Hualien City God Temple’. The statue of Zheng Chenggong, the king who opened up Taiwan, is still placed in the temple and worshipped together with the City God. Opening hours: Open all year round from 6:00 to 20:30.
