Jia Ba Tian Hou Palace is located in Tainan City, where the principal deity worshipped is the Heavenly Mother. It was established during the Qing Dynasty. According to legend, its origin dates back to the 15th year of the Yongli era of the Ming Dynasty. The image of Tian Hou was brought from Meizhou in the mainland by the ancestors, led by Zeng Shun, who accompanied Zheng Chenggong as he landed at Lukang in Tainan. The statue of Mazu is enshrined in Jia Ba Tian Hou Palace. Historically, every three years (later changed to every four years), a pilgrimage would be made on foot from Tainan City’s An District to Lukang’s Bei Shanwei Creek to pay homage and offer incense to the Great Tian Hou Palace on Meizhou Island, as a way to seek blessings for good weather and a prosperous nation.
