There are currently two Tropic of Cancer monuments, one located in Hualien and the other situated in the Shui-xia Village of Chiayi County. The latter was initially built during the 34th year of the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, with coordinates of 23 degrees 27 minutes 4 seconds 51 north latitude and 120 degrees 24 minutes 46 seconds 50 east longitude.
This landmark was damaged during the Jia-Nan earthquake and was later redesigned and restored by the Chiayi Air Force Base to its current appearance.
Apart from the geographical marker, there are no other tourist facilities at this location. In front of the marker stands a lush grove of dragon cypresses and a circular compass, where tourists often take photos to commemorate their visit. The site is open all year round and accessible 24/7.
A must-see tip is the North Tropic of Cancer Sun Pavilion, which serves as an astronomical education center, offering light experiences, solar observations, DIY interactive games, and various telescope displays, making it a place rich in astronomical educational significance.
