The Tropic of Cancer Marker Tower is located in Fengbin Township, Hualien County, facing the Pacific Ocean to the east. It is cylindrical in shape, resembling a lighthouse, and stands tall and spectacular. On the north and south sides of the marker tower, the words ‘Tropic of Cancer’ are inscribed. There is a vertical, narrow slit in the middle of the cylinder. The Tropic of Cancer lies at 23.5 degrees north latitude. On the day of the summer solstice each year, the sun shines directly on the Tropic of Cancer. The unique astronomical phenomenon of ‘no shadow at noon’ is particularly special to the Tropic of Cancer!
