Kenting National Park, a unique park that encompasses both land and sea, is located on the southern side of the Hengchun Peninsula and is surrounded by the sea on three sides. The main attractions of the park are generally divided into east and west routes, centered around Hengchun Ancient City, with further subdivisions into upper and lower east and west routes. The majority of the attractions are located on the lower east and west routes, and due to their spread, it typically takes about two days to visit all the sites.
On the upper east route, visitors can find attractions such as Jialeshuei Scenic Area, Qikong Waterfall, and Chuhuo Scenic Area. The lower east route is home to Longpan Park, Eluanbi Park, Sail Stone, Kenting, and Nanwan Beach. On the upper west route, the Marine Life Museum awaits, while the lower west route features Maobi Tou Park and Houbi Lake Fishery Port, known for its seafood market.
Most visitors primarily focus on a one-day tour of the lower east and west routes. If time permits, one can also visit Hengchun Ancient City, which was built during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty and is one of the best-preserved ancient fortresses on the island. Although many may not be familiar with Hengchun Ancient City, the mention of the movie ‘Cape No. 7’ will likely ring a bell. Hengchun Ancient City is the setting and filming location of the movie. Visitors can explore the home of the male protagonist, Ah Jia, take a photo with the mailbox, send a postcard to friends, and experience the bustling西门 of the ancient city.Visiting Hengchun Ancient City, you can begin your journey on the lower west route by exploring Maobi Tou Park, situated at the southwest tip of the Hengchun Peninsula. Its name, which translates to “cat’s nose,” is inspired by the park’s shape that resembles a crouching cat. The unique topography here has sculpted various natural landscapes, making it a popular spot for admiring the sea and rock formations.
Following your visit to Maobi Tou Park, head east to Longluan Lake, a haven for migratory birds during the autumn and winter seasons, and an excellent location for birdwatching enthusiasts.
As you exit Eluanbi Park and make your way back, you’ll encounter Sail Stone, positioned between Kenting and Eluanbi Park. This striking reef stands in the sea, resembling a sailboat ready to embark on a journey. Continuing on, you’ll arrive at Nanwan Beach. While you might not be familiar with Nanwan Beach itself, you’re likely to know the Oscar-winning film ‘Life of Pi,’ directed by Ang Lee. The beach serves as the backdrop for the movie’s closing scene, with its pristine blue waters and stunning, fine sandy beach. It has become one of the iconic attractions of Kenting National Park and a central hub for water activities in the area.
