The National Museum of Prehistory is located in Taitung City and was established on August 17, 2002. It is an open-air museum built on the site of an archaeological site, commonly referred to as the ‘Prehistory Museum’. The museum was primarily established to preserve the Beinan site in Taitung. In July 1980, during the construction of Beinan Station (now Taitung Station) on the South-Return Line by the Taiwan Railways Administration, a Beinan culture site containing a large number of cultural relics was accidentally excavated. The museum currently displays a variety of cultural relics under three main themes: the Natural History of Taiwan, the Prehistory of Taiwan, and the Austronesian Peoples of Taiwan. Instead of being built directly on the archaeological site, a separate Beinan Cultural Park has been established to preserve the site. The architectural design of the Prehistory Museum was selected through an international competition, with the architect being Michael Graves. The entire museum site spans approximately 10 hectares, with the museum on the east side and the cultural park on the west side. The museum is open year-round from Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
