Rainbow Village

Near Lingdong University of Science and Technology in Nantun District, Taichung City, there lies an old residential area, which annually draws visitors from around the world. A retired veteran, Huang Yongfu, alleviated his boredom in his later years by taking up a paintbrush and using the alleys and streets of the village as a natural canvas, creating various beautiful rainbow lines and cute animals. His bold use of color, lovely compositions, and childlike charm make visitors feel as if they are in a world of rainbows, hence the nickname “Rainbow Village” given by netizens. Huang Yongfu is affectionately known as the “Rainbow Grandpa”. Many photography enthusiasts and young artists come here to take photos and commemorate.
The village entrance, a tens of meters long alley, is where Rainbow Grandpa has painted the most and is the liveliest part. Mr. Huang Yongfu’s home is located in this alley and is easy to find, as his front door is covered with notes left by tourists, filled with blessings: “Rainbow Grandpa, your creations have given the ordinary village an extraordinary color,” “The paintings are so beautiful, please continue to be colorful.

” “Rainbow Grandpa” occasionally steps out of his home to take group photos with visitors upon request. He doesn’t mind if tourists, tired from their journey, push open his door to visit his small, old house. Although the house is not large, the walls are covered with dozens of cartoon characters and animal shapes, the bed is adorned with various woodblock prints, and the table is filled with watercolor brushes, calligraphy brushes, and paper.

Painting has become a habit for Huang Yongfu, and he paints every day, and will continue to do so. The entire area is open all year round, open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00.
