The Shakadang (Mysterious Valley) is located in Taroko. Here, there are magnificent mountains, clear streams and fresh air. Coupled with the flat and easy trail, it always attracts many people to come for hiking on holidays. The name Shakadang comes from the fact that when the Taroko people established a community here, they once dug out molars. The local residents believe that it is a historical trace left by their ancestors, so they call this place Shakadang, which means ‘molar’ in the Taroko language. The Shakadang Stream is about 16 kilometers long. The entire trail runs along the left bank of the Shakadang Stream. The stream bed is covered with large and small stones mainly composed of marble and gneiss. Because the slightly acidic water in the stream dissolves the calcium carbonate component in marble, the stream water often presents a beautiful blue-green color and the scenery is beautiful. There are 2-3 deep pools suitable for diving in Shakadang Stream. The depth is mostly more than 4 or 5 meters. It is a place for many diving enthusiasts to make pilgrimages. Coupled with many waterfalls, there are also many natural SPA waterfalls in Shakadang Stream, forming a beautiful landscape of Shakadang Stream. Opening hours: Open all year round and all day. The specific business status is subject to the opening situation on that day. Must-see tips: 1. If driving by yourself, since the Central Cross-Island Highway (Guanguan – Deji) has been interrupted after the 921 earthquake and has not been repaired yet, please pay attention to detours. 2. Some areas of the trail are on the riverbed. The round trip takes 2 hours. It is recommended not to go after rain (because the river is swift and prone to danger).
