Shanshui Shangdi Temple was originally established during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty. It features a golden statue of Xuantian上帝, which is revered as a deity in sacrificial ceremonies. Subsequently, Nezha, the Crown Prince, was also enshrined and has been worshipped by the local people for over two centuries. The current structure of the temple was rebuilt in 2020.
The most impressive time to visit Shan Shui Shangdi Temple is during the annual Lantern Festival. The unique folk custom of ‘begging for a turtle’ always attracts a large number of tourists. If one can take home a golden turtle, they will return the following year to donate a heavier golden turtle as a vow. Therefore, the number of visitors is always unceasing during this time of the year.
