Shaoshuai Zen Garden was once used as a Japanese military officer’s club. In the later stage of World War II, it was transformed into a guesthouse for the Japanese kamikaze special attack corps. After the war ended, it was changed into a residence where Zhang Xueliang was placed under house arrest. Although the buildings in the Zen Garden are restored as they were, the interior furnishings have completely changed.

The former master bedroom, guest rooms, study, and dressing room have been transformed into a restaurant – ‘Hanqing Hall’. The style of the restaurant is a combination of Chinese, Japanese, and Western elements. There are Chinese mahogany carved tables and chairs, Japanese tatami mats, and Western dining tables. If you want to look for traces of the former Marshal Zhang, you might as well take a look at the restaurant in the Zen Garden.

This restaurant was rebuilt from the former master bedroom. On the wall hangs a group photo of Zhang Xueliang and Miss Zhao Si taken in their residence in Taiwan in 1947. On both sides are inscriptions by Yu Youren: Cultivate the upright spirit of heaven and earth and follow the perfect examples of ancient and modern times. On the ‘historical corridor’ outside the restaurant, there are many black and white old photos of Zhang Xueliang hanging, silently narrating Marshal Zhang’s life under house arrest in Taiwan back then, cultivating orchids, being fascinated by Peking opera, and playing mahjong.

In addition, there is also a tea house in the restaurant. The open-air coffee seats can overlook the entire landscape of Beitou, with a very wide view.
