The Shi Qiu Ling Tunnel, also known as Liu Mingchuan Tunnel, is a south-low and north-high tunnel with a total length of 235 meters. It is classified as a third-grade historical site in Taiwan and is the only tunnel in Taiwan that has been appraised as a historical site. During the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, the Taiwan governor Liu Mingchuan was committed to the construction of Taiwan. In the 13th year of Guangxu, he was granted permission to establish the Taiwan Railway Business General Bureau. In the railway project, the Shi Qiu Ling Tunnel faced significant challenges during construction due to the hard rock on the north side and the soft soil on the south side. Despite the difficulties, several British and German engineers were hired as consultants, and eventually, the first railway tunnel in Taiwan was successfully excavated. The tunnel is open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day.
