The historic area of Fort San Domingo generally refers to three buildings including the main building of Fort San Domingo, the British consulate, and the South City Gate. It is a building with historical significance in Danshui and also a well-known historic site locally. The main building of Fort San Domingo has undergone renovations by several different users including the Spanish, Dutch, Ming Dynasty, Qing Dynasty, and British.
The preserved ancient building is in a square layout with a deep foundation and thick walls. The construction method of stone on the outside and bricks on the inside is not afraid of artillery attacks. There are four rooms on the ground floor of Fort San Domingo. Two of them were used as prisons after renovation by the British. In the late Qing Dynasty, all British people who committed crimes in northern Taiwan were imprisoned here. The location of Fort San Domingo is on a steep terrain. Many tourists will climb up to the observation deck and overlook the Tamsui River. At sunset, the sea at the mouth of the Tamsui River is bathed in the setting sun, and the water and sky merge into one color. It has long had the reputation of ‘Sunset at the Taiwan Garrison’. Coming out from the small path next to Fort San Domingo, you can see the ancient cannon area. To the right of the ancient cannon area is the former British consulate of the Qing Dynasty. The walls are made of red bricks, and the roof is made of red tiles in southern Fujian style. The facade of the first-floor corridor is an arc-shaped arch, and the facade of the second-floor corridor is a semicircular arch. The interior furniture is well-preserved. Sofas, tea tables, and phonographs give people a feeling of time interleaving. Tamkang High School and Aletheia University near Fort San Domingo have a very good environment and are also scenic spots worth visiting. The opening hours are from 9:30 to 17:00 on Mondays to Fridays throughout the year; and from 9:30 to 18:00 on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year.
