In the fourth year of Daoguang in the Qing Dynasty, Deng Chuan’an advocated the establishment of an academy with the eight suburbs of Lukang. After the academy was completed, in memory of Shen Guangwen, it was named after his courtesy name ‘Wenkai’. The academy building has three entrances. In the front hall, eight people such as Zhu Xi and Xu Fuyuan are enshrined. Further inside is the lecture hall, which is used for examinations. Further inside is the back hall where the head of the academy lives. Wenkai Academy has a rich collection of books and has cultivated many imperial examination candidates and juren. It is the cultural cradle of Lukang. Now it is known as one of the three major historical sites in Lukang together with Longshan Temple and Mazu Temple. Open all year round and all day.
