The New Year Ladder Path is a trail around Sun Moon Lake that is rich in cultural characteristics and is also known as the ‘Stairway to Heaven’ due to its steep height. The name ‘Stairway to Heaven’ originates from the time before the construction of the lake’s circumferential road, when visitors had to arrive at Wenwu Temple by water and then walk up from the dock below the temple, hence the title. Following the New Year Ladder Path, there are 366 steps, each representing a day, symbolizing the passage of a year. The dates and names of famous people from various countries born on that day are engraved on the stone slabs of the steps. Visitors can find world-renowned figures born on the same day as themselves by looking at the dates.
Chinese traditional solar terms, rich in cultural significance, are also interspersed along the path, conveying a sense of fun, knowledge, and education.
