The ancient fortress occupies an area of 8 hectares, surrounded by high walls with layers of rocks forming the fortress, completely hidden within the basalt strata. The walls are thick and strong, and beneath the fortress lies a mountain-shaped tunnel, broad enough to accommodate 54 soldiers, presenting a majestic and spectacular sight.

The main entrance of the Xi Tai artillery fortress features a double archway, with the front gate adorned with a stone plaque inscribed by Li Hongzhang, which reads ‘Xi Yu Xi Tai’. Inside the fortress, there are numerous arched ceilings and tunnels that crisscross in all directions. The brick rooms along the sides of the tunnels serve as living quarters for the soldiers and officers. In the event of war, they can communicate within the tunnels.

The fortress is surrounded by cliffs on three sides, with excellent ventilation and lighting within. Ascending the arched passageway and looking around, one can still feel the heroic spirit and national pride of the defenders of old, making it a historical witness to Penghu’s foreign relations. It stands at the entrance to the Penghu Inner Sea, and from the outer wall, one can overlook the vast ocean with an excellent view. It has now been designated as a first-class historical site and is open all year round from 8:00 to 17:30.
