Yang’s Chastity and Filial Piety Arch

Yang’s Chastity and Filial Piety Arch, constructed in 1824, is a memorial archway situated in Hsinchu. The original name of Yang was Yang Jüniang. After her husband’s demise, despite multiple attempts to follow him in death, Yang persevered as both a strict mother and a teacher, single-handedly nurturing her family and children. As her children grew up and brought honor to their family, the hardships she endured were widely admired. After Jüniang’s death, officials including the Fujian Provincial Governor erected the archway to commemorate and honor her virtues.
