The Yilan River originates from Mount Dajiaoxi and Mount Xiaojiaoxi in the Xue Mountain Range on the border between Jiaoxi Township, Yilan County and Wulai Township, New Taipei City. Its main tributaries include Dajiaoxi River, Xiaojiaoxi River, Wushixi River, etc. After these tributaries converge, they successively pass through Yilan City and Zhuangwei Township. Near the Kavalan Bridge not far from the estuary, it joins the Lanyang River and flows into the Pacific Ocean.
