Zhongtai Chan Monastery is a renowned Buddhist site in Nantou, constructed by architect Lee Chu-Yuan. The temple’s main structure, primarily built with stone, symbolizes the solidity and eternal nature of spiritual practice. From the side, it resembles a meditating practitioner amidst green mountains, while the front view evokes the image of a jet ready for takeoff, embodying the Zen principle of ‘enlightenment through self-realization, leading directly to Buddhahood.’ The design fuses contemporary innovation with the profound essence of Zen tradition.
Not only is the main structure of Zhongtai Chan Monastery captivating, but also the exquisite carvings within, such as the crystal glass in the Ancestors’ Hall, the Four Heavenly Kings integrated with the pillars, and the Medicine Buddhas’ Pagoda in the Ten Thousand Buddhas Hall, are all meticulously crafted works rich in artistry and imbued with Zen spirit. Zhongtai Chan Monastery generally does not have places for burning incense, and it is not permitted for devotees to burn incense and pray within the halls. If you are intent on worship, simply clasping your hands in reverence and offering some oil money will suffice. If you are accustomed to traditional Chinese temples, visiting this site will certainly broaden your horizons and introduce you to the rare sight of a smoke-free Buddhist architecture. Opening hours are from 8:00 to 17:00 all year round. Accessibility services include wheelchair-accessible parking, entrances, and restrooms.Zhongtai Chan Monastery
