Zhongshan Memorial Hall is located in the heart of Taipei City, featuring a Chinese-style garden as the main design element. The windows and lattices exhibit classical elegance, while the architecture is harmoniously adorned with blue and white colors, symbolizing freedom and equality. The hall is solemn and dignified, incorporating the top of the Temple of Heaven and the body of a pyramid. The main part of the building is made of white marble walls, with a blue-tiled, golden-glazed octagonal roof, representing the eight virtues of ‘loyalty, filial piety, benevolence, love, faith, righteousness, harmony, and peace’ gathered at the top, connecting with heaven and embodying the concept of ‘unity of heaven and man’.
The hourly Changing of the Guard ceremony at Zhongshan Memorial Hall is a highlight for tourists. At every hour, the guard of honor emerges from the ground floor lobby, proceeds to the elevator in front of the lobby, ascends to the bronze statue hall on the fourth floor, and performs a very solemn and grand ceremony. The movements are steady and solemn, with the entire venue quiet and respectful, only punctuated by the soldiers’ footsteps and their crisp commands. The entire ceremony lasts for 10 minutes, after which visitors can take photos outside the railing.
The spacious square of Zhongshan Memorial Hall often hosts large-scale cultural performances, such as outdoor performances by Cloud Gate Dance Theatre and ‘Sounds of the Century’ concerts, making it a well-known cultural square in Taipei. Additionally, the annual Taipei Lantern Festival during the Lantern Festival is a significant annual event at Zhongshan Memorial Hall. The hall is open all year round from 9:00 to 18:00, with specific business hours subject to the day’s opening status.
