Heyang Village, a historical and cultural protection area in Zhejiang Province, is located in Xinjian Town, within the Xiandu Scenic Area of Jinyun County. In 933 AD, Zhu Qingyuan, the former secretary of the Wu Yue Kingdom, and his brother settled in Jinyun to escape the turmoil of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. They named the village ‘Heyang’ due to their ancestral home in Henan Xinyang.
Heyang Village boasts a long-standing history and a profound cultural heritage. The Zhu family has been known for its tradition of farming and studying, valuing agriculture and commerce, and producing numerous talents, making them one of the wealthiest families in the region. During the Song and Yuan dynasties, eight Jinshi (advanced scholars) emerged, forming the ‘Yiyang Poetry School’. The existing water system of one stream and two ponds, along with the village layout of one street and five alleys, was designed in the Yuan Dynasty.
Over ten ancient ancestral halls and a hundred old residences with more than 1500 rooms, mostly built during the Ming and Qing dynasties, form a clan estate-style ancient residential architecture complex. The village is home to the Song Dynasty’s ‘Fuchang Temple’, which combines three teachings, the Yuan Dynasty’s ‘Bashi Gate’, and the stone ‘Xihan’ bestowed by Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang in front of the ‘Bashi Gate’. Ancient bridges, agricultural tools, furniture, murals, poems, plaques, carvings, and the unique Heyang paper-cutting art, as well as the traces of peasant uprisings throughout the ages, contribute to the rare thousand-year-old cultural village in Jiangnan.
