Published on October 21, 2022, amidst the crisp air of autumn, I decided to rent a bicycle on Changxing Island for a scenic cycling tour around the island.
Changxing Island, part of Chongming, is collectively known as the ‘Two Islands of Chongming’ along with Hengsha Island. The island boasts beautiful scenery and sparse population, making it an ideal place for a brief escape from the city and a relaxation of the spirit, especially during this season when the island’s oranges are ripe and abundant.
On the island circuit, one can witness various landscapes: the romantic seawall on the north side of the island is perfect for cycling, photography, or simply for being alone with one’s thoughts. As you ride along the road, wind turbines rotate overhead, and the sea breeze is refreshingly sweet, offering a sense of healing.
The ‘Natural Oxygen Bar’—Jianye Park, although not accessible for cycling, offers a breathtaking view of water oaks lining the Fenghuang Highway, creating an endless green tunnel that seems to fill one’s lungs with oxygen while cycling beneath its shade.
Along the way, one can see numerous rice paddies and casually pass through some villages, immersing oneself in the tranquility and freedom brought by the wind blowing through the ears.
